คำศัพท์บาลี-สันสกฤต ไม่ใช่แค่เพื่อสุภาพเท่านั้น

เราทราบกันดีว่า การรับคำในภาษาบาลี-สันสกฤตมาใช้นั้น ช่วยให้เรามีคำในภาษามากขึ้น คุณอีกประการหนึ่งก็คือ การทำให้ภาษามีระดับชั้น มีคำราชาศัพท์ คำสุภาพ ก่อให้เกิดความรื่นหูขึ้น แต่ใครเคยสังเกตไหม คำด่าในภาษาไทยเราก็มีไม่น้อยที่เป็นคำบาลี-สันสกฤต ลองมาดูกัน

- อุบาทว์ บ. อุปทฺทว, ส. อุปทฺรว "สิ่งเกิดแบบไม่คาดฝัน, โชคร้าย, ซวย"
- อัปรีย์ ส. อปฺริย, บ. อปฺปิย "ไม่เป็นที่รัก"

Addition to "Inbox"

For incoming mails that we want to take away from Inbox without any action/response yet.

• inbox2: Use number 2 in sense of "secondary inbox" or "inbox too".
• inbox0: Use number 0 (zero) in sense of "leave no action" or "old/obsolete, expired".

Originally, only "inbox2" was defined for both purposed.  Here it is split so that inbox2 can be used for lower priority or "read later", whereas inbox0 is to be skipped.  Comparing with GMail's Priority Inbox function which indicates prioritized mails within inbox, "inbox2" label separates low-priority mails from inbox.  In addition, the label may be set as "show if unread" and/or prefixed with '.' to place it to upper part of label list.

ตกแต่ง-ตบแต่ง

• ตกแต่ง ก. ประดับ, ปรุงจัดให้ดี, ทําให้งาม.
• ตบแต่ง ก. ทําให้งาม; จัดให้ลูกสาวมีเรือนตามประเพณี เช่น ตบแต่งลูกสาวให้เป็นฝั่งเป็นฝา.

• คำว่า "ตบแต่ง" มีที่มาจากการปั้zนหม้อ โดยเมื่อช่างปั้นขึ้นดินเป็นรูปหม้อแล้วอาจใช้ไม้แบนๆ สลักลายและตบรอบๆ หม้อเพื่อ แต่งลายบนตัวหม้อให้สวยงามก่อนนำไปเผา

Tags for FYI & Forwarding

1. ".fyi2-fwd2"
• FYI normally means "for your information".  But we may extend to "interest" and "inspiration" as well.
• FWD is abbreviation of "forward", as traditionally seen from AV-device's panel.  Also "F-FWD" was considered because by nature we usually do fast-forwarding (i.e., don't think much and just forward)
2. "+2" can be symbolized label of "fyi2-fwd2".
• It means "adding (sharing) to others too" in comparison with term "+1" in social networking language that means "add me as another one vote/voice/count": i.e., "me too".
• "+2 xxx" (where xxx denotes additional sub-keyword) to optionally specify some keyword if we want to implement several topic groups.  Then this label can be said "add to xxx too".

Sale vs Sales

Sale

• [noun] Act of selling.  Quantity sold.  Opportunity to sell.  Special disposal of goods, as at reduced prices.
• [idioms] For sale: offered to be sold, made avaiable to purchasers.  On sale: able to be bought at reduced prices.

Sales

• [noun] Plural of sale.
• [adjective] of, pertaining to, or engaged in sales:- sales records, sales department/manager.

• Sales volume: The plural is used because sales volume generally involves more than one sale, not just one. [English-Test.net]

Wiki Gardening

The act of keeping the wiki contents neat and tidy, so that as the wiki grows the content is accurate, uncluttered, useful and well organized.

Activities

• Linkify:  One great thing about a wiki is the ability to enable cross-linking of pages. Many contributors, however, don't recognize all the opportunities to create links from the words in their entries. Where you see a word that could be a link but isn't, "linkify it" by turning it into a live link. You may find yourself linking to a page that doesn't exist, and that's OK. Someone (maybe even you) can always create the new page, or find another page to redirect the link to. It can also be useful to create indexes of relevant pages to help others navigate.
• De-duplicate:  Different contributors will create highly similar pages with slightly different titles. Merge those pages, and redirect all the links to the merged page.
• Atomize:  Break long pages into meaningful sub-pages, then link to them from an opening page. Remember, it's easier to link to a page than a section. If there's a page having sub-sections that other pages will want to link to, those sub-sections should be their own pages.
• Tag:  Add tags where others have not. It's that simple.
• Clear/Prune/Secure:  Remove obsolete material.  If the material is old but still useful, tag it as "Archived" or move it to a separate Archive workspace.  Really remove confidential material that shouldn't be on the wiki in the first place; apply appropriate permissions.

• Clean up:  Fix spelling errors. Clean up awkward sentences. Correct grammatical errors.  If you don't have permissions on the page, then leave a comment.
• Organize:  Move pages within or between spaces as appropriate. Try to create structure within the wiki.

 

Remarks

• Anyone can garden.  Gardening is an activity, not a job description. Anyone in a wiki can garden. In fact, the best gardeners are those who are closest to the subject matter. So pick a corner of the wiki that you really care about and take care of it--even if "gardener" isn't in your job description.
• Do a little at a time.  When you see an opportunity to prune, just take a minute and do it.
• Don't expect to finish.  Healthy wikis grow to the sky.

As software versioning identifier next to software name.  People usually refer field name "version" but however there is variation among softwares: version, edition, release.

VER here is actually not abbreviated from "VERsion", but comes from "Version/Edition/Release".  So it is entirely uppercase, not "Ver".

Use as alternative abbreviation to ".follow".  It comes from arithmetic home-work: ex. "12 + (34 - 56) × 78 ÷ 9 = ?"; i.e., to check (follow up) result of the problem.

i.e., what-is/how-much (?) progress (% completion) now?
This term is good replacement to "=?" especially in case to avoid any existing "=..." label(s).

• "this week" : easily understood but not compact.

• >pub or >* : for public, to publicize.
• >? or >&? : for discussion, meeting topic.
• Shorter than ".meeting".
• >&? emphasizes more at colleagues (refer "&+").

• Linking: Links must connect and cross-reference content (blog posts, wikis, etc.) into an interactive and interdependent community
• Authoring: Simple tools must be provided to allow everyone to contribute and edit content.
• Tagging: Users must be able to assign their own terms and descriptions, which allows content to be structured and organized in a way that is meaningful for users
• Extensions: Applications should include a suggestion and recommendation system such as that found on Amazon or StumbleUpon (the “If you like X, you’ll like Y feature)

Search can do type-ahead look up words in label when they are separated by blank or dash.
Most symbol characters are denoted by dash (-) in search expression.

Nested Labels in GMail

Labels are more flexible than folders because a given email can have several labels but can't be in several folders at the same time. A highly requested feature for labels, though, comes from the world of folders: the ability to organize labels hierarchically.

If you think this might be useful to you, go to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, look for 'Nested Labels,' enable it and click 'Save.' You'll then need to name your label with slashes (/) to make it the child of another. For example, let's say you wanted to create a simple hierarchy with a 'Home' label, and inside it a 'Family' and a 'Vacation' label. Just create three labels with the following names:

Home
Home/Family
Home/Vacation

You can then create 'Home/Family/Kids,' 'Home/Pets,' etc., to get something like the screenshot on the left. If you had the parent label 'Home' before you don't have to create it from scratch.

1. Labels need to be created one by one from parent to child.  For example above: it is to create "Home" and then "Home/Family": i.e., cannot create "Home/Family" directly without having "Home" before, otherwise we'll get non-hierchical "Home/Family" as a single label.

• [delete!] = Delete instantly/automatically via filter.  Enclosing in bracket "[...]" helps avoiding this label while spelling to look up in 'Move to' and 'Labels' commands (i.e., we'd prefer "delete2" than "delete!" in such manual operation).

Alternative translation of GMail keyboard shortcuts

For easier remembering :)

• a (reply to all) = answer.  When we become familiar and not longer relative from 'r' (reply).
• e (archive) = end.  In GMail, archive technically means "skip/remove from inbox" and is usually encouraged over '#' (delete) command.

Recently feel uncertain to use "upcountry" (or "up-country"?) as it is not direct translation. Anyway, probably it's still the best term.
